A flat sheet has to be tucked in, and by morning it has usually come loose, bunched up or slipped off a corner. A fitted sheet has elastic sewn all the way around its edge and deep corner pockets that wrap around the mattress. Pull it on once and it holds itself in place: smooth, snug and tidy, night after night.
